Biographical History

H F Hardacre, politician and Queensland Labour minister, was born at Dayton, Ohio ca. 7 March 1861 to English emigrants Sarah Ann and James Hardacre. After his father's death, Hardacre returned to England with his mother. He left school at nine to support his mother. In 1883 Hardacre emigrated to Queensland. He worked as a butcher in Queensland and New South Wales for several years and became involved with the land and labour reform movement. He was secretary of the Brisbane Butchers' and the Brisbane Tramways Employees' unions. In 1893 Hardacre was elected to the Legislative Assembly as member for Leichhardt and served as both Minister for Lands and Agriculture and as Minister for Public Instruction from 1915. He resigned from Parliament in 1919 and became a Land Court judge. After his retirement in 1931 Hardacre continued to speak and write on land issues. He died on 5 March 1938.
