Biographical History
James Russell Wiggins was born in 1903 in Luverne, Minnesota. He became a reporter for the Rock County, Minnesota Star in 1922, later becoming its editor and publisher. In 1930, he began work at the St. Paul Dispatch-Pioneer Press, becoming managing editor before moving briefly to a position at the New York Times. In 1947 he began his career at the Washington Post, rising to editor and executive vice-president before his retirement in 1968. He served as ambassador to the United Nations from November 1968 to February 1969 before purchasing the Ellsworth American, a newspaper in Ellsworth, Maine. In 1989 he sold the newspaper but remained its executive editor. Wiggins died in 2000.
