Biographical History

Frederick Earl Shideman was born on 16 October 1915 in Albion, Michigan. He earned his B.A. from Albion College (Albion, MI) in 1936, his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in 1941 and his M.D. from the University of Michigan in 1946. From 1942 until 1952, Dr. Shideman was an instructor, assistant and associate professor of pharmacology at the University of Michigan. From 1952-1962, Dr. Shideman was professor and chair of the department of pharmacology at the University of Wisconsin. Dr. Shideman joined the faculty at the University of Minnesota in 1962 as professor and department chair of pharmacology.

During his tenure in Minnesota, Dr. Shideman developed one of the largest pharmacology departments in the country and expanded the subject emphasis to include toxicology and clinical pharmacology. He was also active in the interchange of pharmacology knowledge by routinely sponsoring South Korean physicians and students to study at the University of Minnesota. He was a fellow in the Royal Society of Medicine (England) and an honorary member of the Korean Medical Association. In 1978, Yonsei University (Seoul, Korea) awarded Dr. Shideman an honorary Doctor of Laws degree. Dr. Shideman retired from the University in 1987. Frederick Shideman died on 21 April 1988.
