Thomas served in the United States Army during World War I and World War II, engaging in chemical warfare research. A 1911 graduate of the Royal Columbia Teaching Hospital, she worked as a nurse in Juneau, Alaska and then in Seattle. During World War II, both sons were drafted into the United States Army, while Harriet G. Thompson worked as a head instructor for the American National Red Cross Nurses' Aides training program in Seattle. During the last years of World War II, the Thompson family purchased McConnell Island, part of the San Juan Islands in Washington State.
