Biographical History
Victorine du Pont was the oldest daughter of E.I. du Pont, the founder of the family powder business. She married Ferdinand Bauduy in 1813, but he died six weeks later, and she never remarried.
Victorine du Pont Bauduy, the eldest child of Eleuthère Irénée du Pont (1771-1834) and Sophie Madeleine Dalmas du Pont (1775-1828), was born in Paris and came to the United States in 1800. Her father was the founder of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company. She began her education in 1800-1801 in New York at a school where French-speaking children were taught English. After her family's move to Delaware, she briefly attended Mrs. Rivardi's Academy for Young Ladies in Philadelphia from 1805-1808. As the eldest child of the du Pont family and with an ailing mother, she was responsible for overseeing her younger siblings.
