Biographical History

Hale J. Zukas (1943-) attended U.C. Berkeley in the mid-1960s where he joined the Rolling Quads, a group of severely disabled students who organized to advocate for their rights. He went on to become one of the founders of the Disabled Students Program at Berkeley, and graduated in 1971 with a degree in mathematics. In 1972, Zukas and others founded the Center for Independent Living in Berkeley, the world's first community-based independent living center. In 1983, he joined the World Institute on Disability in Oakland, California, and became vice chair of the U.S. Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board.
