Biographical History

Joseph Ernest Nephtali Dufault, later self-names Will James, was a cowboy originally from Canada, who went on to become an author and artist of the American West. He is well-known for his book Smoky the Cowhorse.

William Roderick, commonly known as Will James, was born Joseph Ernest Nephtali Dufault in 1892. Author of 24 books and scores of articles, James is best known for his horse story, Smoky (1926) which won him the Newberry Medal for Most Distinguished contribution to American Literature for children, and for his autobiography, Lone Cowboy. James, through his stories and illustrations, chronicled the life of the American cowboy of the early 20th century.
