Biographical History
British physician and physiologist who specialized in investigating the physiological effects of high altitude, cold, heat, and exercise on the human body. Pugh was born in 1919 in Shrewsbury, England and was educated at Oxford University, obtaining an M.D. in 1939. In 1950, after having completed his service with the British Navy, Pugh joined the staff of the Medical Research Council"s Division in Human Physiology where he studied the effects of extreme environments. Pugh participated in the 1952 reconnaissance expedition to Mt. Cho Oyu, the successful 1953 expedition to Mt. Everest, the 1955-58 Trans-Antartic Expedition, and, the 1960-61 expedition to Mt. Everest. Pugh died on Dec. 22, 1994.
