Biographical History

On Aug. 1, 1947, USDA resumed research on rubber production from guayule shrubs with the establishment of the U.S. Natural Rubber Research Station at Salinas, California. The Bureau of Agricultural and Industrial Chemistry was assigned responsibility for research on rubber extraction, processing, and byproduct utilization, while the Bureau of Plant Industry, Soils, and Agricultural Engineering received responsibility for research on crop production. BAIC's Western Regional Research Laboratory had oversight of the Natural Rubber Extraction and processing Investigations Project. The U.S. Natural Rubber Research Station continued to operate until Apr. 30, 1953, when it was terminated for lack of funds.
