Leslie Cheek, Jr. was born in 1908. He was professor of fine arts at the College of William and Mary and director of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. He married Mary Tyler Freeman, the daughter of Douglas Southall Freeman. (After Cheek's death she married John Mcclenahan.)In the 1930's, Leslie Cheek and Stewart Bryan founded the Chebry Corporation to purchase 3,000 acres of land southeast of Asheville, N. C. The Cheeks owned a farm there from 1941 to 1955.

Leslie Cheek, Jr. (1908-1992) was Director of the Baltimore Museum of Art, 1939-1942 and Director of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, 1948-1968. He attended Harvard College and received a degree in architecture from Yale. He was associated with the Museum in 1940 when, because of his innovative exhibition design skills, Abby Aldrich Rockefeller invited him to direct an exhibition "devoted to telling the American people of the dangers of Hitler's assault on the Free World and of the necessity for the United States to prepare itself for the inevitable war," tentatively titled "For Us the Living."

Cheek studied Fine Arts and was trained in architecture and stage design. His work as director of the Baltimore Museum of Art was marked by innovative and theatrical exhibitions, and led to his selection by the trustees of the Museum of Modern Art as curator for a planned exhibit "For Us The Living," regarding the rise of Nazism and facism in Europe.
