Biographical History
Founded in 1913, the Brown & Haley Company achieved a significant place in Tacoma's history as a family-owned business that went on to become one of the largest candy manufacturers on the West Coast. Instrumental in directing the company for some forty years, chairman and CEO, Fred T. Haley (1912-1905), who was progressive on many social issues, tried to instill his ideals into his business practices. Haley also was active in business, civic, and education organizations. He served on numerous boards, commissions, committees, and councils at the national, state, and local level, including the Washington State Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, the Washington State Board Against Discrimination, the board of governors of the Evergreen State College, Tacoma School Board, Pacific Northwest International Trade Council, and the Washington State Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights.
