Biographical History
The food and nutrition curriculum began as a part of the domestic economy courses in 1872. The Department of Household Science was established in 1918. The name was changed to the Department of Food and Nutrition in 1953. Graduate work for the Ph. D. degree was added in 1930. In addition to graduate work, the department offered work for the B.S. degree in four majors: community nutrition, dietetics, food and nutrition and related science, and food science. The department merged with the Department of Food Technology from the College of Agriculture in 1990 to form the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition, which is jointly administered by the College of Agriculture and the College of Family and Consumer Sciences.
