Biographical History

Born at Sulzburg in Baden, Germany on Nov. 19, 1825, Herman Kiefer was the son of Conrad Kiefer, a physician, and Henrietta Schweychert. Herman Kiefer attended school at Freiberg, Mannheim and Carlsruhe before going to the University of Freiburg and Heidelburg. He also studied at Prague and Vienna. Fleeing from Germany in 1849 after taking part in the revolution, Kiefer came to the United States. He opened an office in Detroit on Oct. 19, 1849. Kiefer married Francisca Kehle and they had nine children. Kiefer campaigned for Abraham Lincoln for President and was active in anti-slavery groups before the Civil War, and was awarded an honorary doctorate of Medicine by the University of Michigan.
