Biographical History
Nommensen University was founded in 1954 in Sumatra, Indonesia, by the Huria Kristen Batak Protestan (H.K.B.P.). In 1956, the University received a grant from the Ford Foundation to strengthen and enhance its Faculty (Department) of Economics. Initiated in 1957 and administered by the NLC's Department of World Missions Cooperation, the program provided for salaries of visiting economic professors, scholarships for Nommensen graduate students' study in the U.S. and funds for equipment and supplies. J. Robert Busche, NLC Assistant Executive Director, in coordination with the secretary of the NLC's Department of World Missions Cooperation.
Assumed a large role in program administration. In addition, the NLC's International Exchange Office assisted in student exchange issues. The Lutheran World Federation and the Rheinish Mission (Germany) also supported the school. The program was extended through 1966.
