National Society of the Colonial Dames in Georgia.

The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America was founded in 1891 in Philadelphia. Among its objects and purposes are "to preserve historical manuscripts and public and private records; to publish historical books of reference; to mark sites of notable events and historic buildings." The Society awards scholarships and prizes to encourage the study of history, to arouse interest in the heritage of the past. Membership is open to women who are legimately descended from a person who served one or more of the thirteen colonies by providing service to the colony between May 13, 1607 and April 19, 1775. The Georgia Chapter was initiated in 1893, and is composed of 17 Town Committees. Established in 1898, Atlanta was the first of these Town Committees.
