Biographical History

The daughter of Elizabeth Everts Paine and Frederick Lewis Collins, Marjory Collins spent her childhood in Scarsdale, N.Y., and in Europe. She attended Sweetbriar College and the University of Munich. She studied photography with Ralph Steiner (1935-1940) and during World War II worked for the Office of War Information. After the war she lived in Alaska for a year, and then traveled extensively, working on photographic assignments in Egypt, Ireland, Ethiopia, and Italy. She was associated with the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions (1964-1968) and during the late 1960s worked for the American Public Health Association and was news editor for the Journal of Public Health. Collins was married and divorced three times. In 1984 she received an A.B. from Antioch University West. She was founder and first editor of Peace Concern; a founder of Prime Time, Inc.; and an active member of Older Women's Liberation (OWL).
