John T. Hayward, U.S. Naval officer, was born in New York City on November 15, 1908. He joined the Navy in 1925 as an enlisted man and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1930. He served in the Navy until 1968, retiring with the rank of vice admiral. Highlights of his career include service in WWII as Commander of Bombing Squadron 106 in the Pacific Theatre; work on the Manhattan Project that developed the atomic bomb; CO, Naval Ordnance Laboratory at White Oak; CO, USS Franklin D. Roosevelt; and president of the Naval War College, Newport, RI, 1966-1968. He died on May 23, 1999 in Atlantic Beach, Florida.
