Biographical History

Benjamin F. Jones purchased a share in American Iron Works in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1851. Later, he was joined by James H. Laughlin to form what would become J & L Steel in 1861. Their mills included facilities in Hazelwood, south side Pittsburgh, and Aliquippa and were a competitor of Carnegie Steel Company. In 1974, Ling-Temco-Vought purchased Jones & Laughlin Corporation as part of LTV Steel and all production facilities were closed in 1989.
