Biographical History
John E. Owens was one of the most popular American actors of the nineteenth century. He was born in Liverpool and at the age of five was brought to Philadelphia where he made his stage debut in 1841 under the aegis of William Burton. Although his rise was comparatively slow, he acquired celebrity as a comedian within ten years. Owens established himself in the public affection with his characterizations of Yankee characters, especially the character of Solon Shingle in "The People's Lawyer," which he first performed in 1856. He also managed companies in Baltimore, New Orleans, and other cities.
