Biographical History
Incorporated by Col. William C. Greene, an Arizona rancher, in 1899 to develop mineral claims at Cananea in northern Sonora, Mexico. The company established the town of Cananea and various supporting enterprises including a company store, hospital, school, utilities, and railroad. Thomas F. Cole and John D. Ryan took control of the company in February 1907.
Historical note: The area near Cananea, Sonora, Mexico was purchased and developed for copper mining in 1896 by William C. Greene. The Cananea Consolidated Copper Company was in full production by 1903, experiencing a 1906 labor strike and periodic disruptions during the Mexican Revolution, 1910-1920; copper mining operations in the area continued into the 1980s.
