U.S. Representative and Senator, of Detroit, Mich.
Lawyer, U. S. Representative, attorney general of Michigan, and U. S. Senator.
Born in Shaftsbury, Vt., July 10, 1805; graduated from Williams College, 1830; moved to Michigan; served in state legislature, 1838; drew up platform of first Republican convention and gave it that name; member of U.S. Congress, Republican, March 4, 1841-March 3, 1843; Senator, Oct. 5, 1861-March 3, 1871; died in Detroit, Mich., Apr. 2, 1871. Jacob Merritt Howard was Attorney General of Michigan from 1854 to 1862.
James Jesse Strang had tried to usurp leadership of the Mormon Church from Brigham Young in 1844-1845, and moved to Beaver Island, Michigan in 1847. After his follower Hezekiah D. McCulloch was accused of murdering an inhabitant of Beaver Island, Strang was accused of breaking him out of jail, and terrorizing the gentile inhabitants of the island.
