Biographical History

A graduate of Princeton University in 1939, Piper worked on the Manhattan Project as one of the scientists credited with building the first atomic bomb. After receiving his PhD in American Studies from the University of Pennsylvania, he taught at California Institute of Technology. He would become dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Southern Illinois University Carbondale from 1962-1967, and a faculty member in the English department from 1968-1988. He was a biographer of F. Scott Fitzgerald and edited two of Malcolm Crowley's books. He died in 1999 in Murphysboro, Illinois.
