Biographical History
The President's Advisory Committee on South Africa was appointed by University President James T. Laney in September 1985. The first report was submitted to the president on June 2, 1986, following a full year of consultation by the Committee and broad discussions about apartheid throughout the Emory community. The Committee was charged "to sort through the issues presented by the crisis in South Africa and to make recommendation about what we [Emory] can and should do about them as an academic community." The Committee included J. Thomas Bertrand, Karen Root, David McHenry, and was chaired by Jon Gunnemann. The Committee produced a list of five recommendations, primarily related to financial investments.
