Gordon R. Sullivan was a United States U.S.) Army officer who was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant through the R.O.T.C. (Reserve Officers Training Corps) program at Norwich University where he graduated in 1959. His active duty spanned the years 1960-1995 attaining the rank of general and Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army. He was an armor officer and attended the U.S. Army War College from 1977-1978. As Chief of Staff of the Army he "led the Army through fundamental transformation after the liberation of Kuwait which included force reductions and base closures accompanied by doctrinal change, successes in peackeeping, emphasis on new ways of war and experiments that moved the Army into the information age."
Gordon Sullivan became Chief of Staff of the U. S. Army on 21 June 1991. Prior to assuming that position, he served in a variety of command and staff assignments in the United States, Germany, Korea and Vietnam. General Sullivan graduated with the Norwich University class of 1959 and went on to earn an M.A. degree in political science from the University of New Hampshire. The Sullivan Museum and History Center at Norwich University was named in his honor. The control file included with the collection contains additional biographical information on Gordon R. Sullivan.
