Biographical History
John Starkey was a bookseller and publisher active in London between 1658 and 1689. He was the publisher of Milton's Samson agonistes. Jeffreys was an English judge (appointed Lord Chief Justice of Cheshire in 1680 and made Baron Jeffreys in 1685) who presided over many state trials, including the assizes held at Winchester in August 1685, where he passed severe sentences on those accused of having taken up arms in Monmouth's rebellion.
