Biographical History
William D. Jones was born in Grandview, Missouri, on July 20, 1857, the son of John Reid Jones and Mary Ann (Williams) Jones. He came to Montana sometime in 1877 and worked as a cowboy near Cascade for four years. He then squatted on some land near Dupuyer and began running sheep. He gradually built up his herd and acquired homestead land. He also served a clerk for a sheep ranch, was a founder of the First State Bank of Bynum, and a farmer. He was a county commissioner both in Pondera County and in Teton County, when it was formed. William was elected to the state legislature in 1900. He married Lillian Copley on January 24, 1888 in Kansas City. Their son Kyle Jones was born the following December. The couple had a second son John Reid, named for his grandfather, and a daughter Wilma. He died on May 30, 1934.
Kyle Jones was born in December 1888 in Dupuyer. After graduating from high school he attended Montana State College in Bozeman. During World War I, he served as a private overseas from July 1918 to July 1919. Kyle taught school in White Sulphur Springs, Dixon, and Bynum. He served as cashier of the First State Bank of Bynam, and guided it through voluntary liquidation in 1934-1935. He married Maud W. about 1920. He died in Missoula on February 15, 1972.
