Biographical note: Austrian emigre economist.
Karl Pribram was born in Prague, where he studied law at Karl Ferdinand University. After further study at the universities of Berlin and Vienna, he became an instructor in 1907 at the University of Vienna. He was an official at the Austrian Ministry of Commerce (Handelsministerium, 1917-18; chief of the Division for Social Policy in the Austrian Ministry for Social Administration (Ministerium fuer Social Verwaltung), 1918-21; head of research and statistical department at the League of Nations' International Labour Office, Geneva, 1921-28; professor of economics at the University of Frankfurt am Main, 1928-33; a research member of the Brookings Institution, 1933-35; a member of the U.S. Social Security Board, 1935-42; and senior economist at the U.S. Tariff Commission, 1942-51. He later taught at American University, Washington, D.C. Pribram was an expert on economic thought and policymaking.
