Biographical History

Benjamin Robert Palmer married Phebe Ann Jones from Quaker Hill, Dutchess County, N.Y. The Palmer family were Quakers. Their daughter, Minerva "Minnie" Palmer was born in Clintondale, Ulster County, New York on May 12, 1853. Minnie attended Geneva Union and Classical School in Geneva, N.Y. before coming to Cornell in 1873. "Minnie" stayed at Cornell until 1876, but apparently did not graduate. She went on to receive a medical degree from the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania (the first medical school for women) in 1880. She married Mr. C. S. Walker from Rochester, N.Y. in 1892. In 1907, she lived in Charleston, West Virginia, and reported her occupation as "Home-making for self & husband." She died in Charleston, WV on September 16, 1921. Her brother, Edward Herendeen Palmer graduated from Cornell in 1877.

Henry Austin Palmer was born in 1842, a native of Stonington, CT; worked there as an express agent, then a clerk in the US custom house; came to CA in 1862 and was employed in a banking and assay office in Folsom until 1864, and then spent a year in assaying in Michigan Bluff; worked as cashier in US Mint at San Francisco, 1865-67; cashier at banking house of Banks & Co. until 1869 when he organized and was appointed cashier of the Union Savings Bank of Oakland; became the first cashier of the Union National bank, established in 1877, serving as president from 1882-86, while also serving as vice president and treasurer of the Union Savings Bank; in 1867, he married Jane O. Day; their children were Theodore S., Elizabeth Day, and Harold King Palmer; in 1882, along with C.T. Mills and M.L. Wicks, Palmer incorporated the Pomona Land and Water Company; in 1884 served as vice president, and then president until 1887; also became the owner and incorporator of the Pomona Bank in 1883.
