Biographical History
Landcape architect John Claudius Loudon was born on his family's farm in Scotland, and studied chemistry, botany, and agriculture at the University of Edinburgh. He began working as a landscape planner in Scotland and England, published numerous influential articles, and founded and edited several periodicals; about this time he was permanently weakened by rheumatic fever. He developed a style he termed Gardenesque, designed to be both aesthetic and instructive, which led to the development of the arboretum. His diverse and influential writings include horticulture, farming, greenhouses, architecture, and pioneering works on city planning. He helped popularize the term landscape architect, and influenced Victorian tastes in gardens and architecture.
John Claudius Loudon (1783-1843) was an influential landscape designer and horticultural writer of the early 19th century. He made notable contributions to the theories of landscape architecture, city planning, and cemetery design.
Adam Dugdale (1771-1838), a successful cotton broker at Liverpool, purchased Dovecot House in 1819, and kept it as his principle residence until his death. Dovecot House was demolished by 1931, to make way for new development.
John Claudius Loudon, Scottish horticulturalist and landscape architect, was the author of the Encyclopedia of gardening and other works on botany and plant classification.
William Jerdan was a Scottish journalist, author and publisher.
