Biographical History
Pioneer ranching family. Came to West Texas from Lampasas, Texas, in 1881. Robert Benjamin (Ben) Masterson began working cattle around Mobeetie, in Wheeler County, Texas. In 1898 he bought 125,000 acres in King and Knox Counties of Texas and started the JY Ranch, which eventually passed to his sons, T.B. (Tom) and Ben, Jr. Additional property was acquired from the old LX range near Amarillo, Texas. T.B. Masterson bred Aberdeen Angus cattle, and so did his son, T.B., Jr. Floyce Masterson, widow of T.B., Jr., continued to manage the ranch after his death in 1953. The JY Ranch was sold to G.A. and Ed Lowrance of San Antonio, Texas, in 1956. The JY brand, however, was retained and transferred to Texas Technogical College.
