Biographical History
The Society of Social and Moral Hygiene of Seattle was founded in 1911 primarily to promote sexual health through educational reforms. Composed of physicians, teachers, clergymen and other prominent members of the community, the Seattle hygiene movement attempted to prevent the spread of venereal diseases by conducting extensive outreach campaigns to parents of school-aged children across the city to promote better sex education. Founding officers of the Society included University of Washington Department of Education professor, Edward O. Sisson (President) and Dr. Sydney Strong (Secretary).
