Biographical History

Middleton Pope Barrow, (grandson of Wilson Lumpkin), a Senator from Georgia; born near Antioch (now Stephens), Oglethorpe County, Ga., August 1, 1839; attended a private academy; graduated from the law department of the University of Georgia at Athens in 1860; admitted to the bar in 1860 and commenced practice in Athens, Clarke County, Ga.; during the Civil War entered the Confederate service in 1861 and served throughout the war; resumed the practice of law in Athens; member of the State constitutional convention in 1877; member, State house of representatives 1880-1881; elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate in 1882 to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Benjamin H. Hill and served from November 15, 1882, to March 3, 1883; was not a candidate for reelection; resumed the practice of law in Athens, Ga.; judge of the eastern judicial circuit of Georgia from January 6, 1902, until his death in Savannah, Ga., December 23, 1903; interment in a private cemetery on the family plantation in Oglethorpe County, Ga.
