Biographical History

James Birdseye McPherson (b. Nov. 14, 1828, Green Creek Township, Ohio-d. July 22, 1864, Atlanta, Georgia), Brigadier General in the U.S. Army, was a Military Academy graduate (1853) who served as chief engineer to General Grant and was appointed military superintendent of railways, District of Western Tennessee. He later commanded the right wing of Grant's army at the Battle of Vicksburg, commanded the 2nd Division, Department of Tennessee, and received command of the XVII Army Corps in 1863. General McPherson took command of Sherman's Army of Tennessee in Huntsville, Alabama in 1864 and was killed that year.

An 1853 West Point graduate who became a major general in the Union army during the Civil War, McPherson was shot and killed near Atlanta, Georgia, on July 22, 1864.
