Biographical History

Anne Roelofson was born in Kentucky in 1811 to Mary Smith and Lawrence Roelofson, Jr. She and John Tucker Scott were married in 1830 in Illinois. Anne died in the Wyoming Territory in 1852, during the family's journey to Oregon. John Tucker Scott was born in Kentucky in 1809. In 1852 he brought his family to Oregon. His wife Anne and son Willie both died on the journey. John died in Forest Grove, Oregon in 1900. Abigail Jane Scott was born in Tazewella Co., Illinois, October 22, 1834. She was the third of Ann Roelofson's and John Tucker Scott's twelve children. She was a strong proponent of the suffrage movement and other social reforms in Oregon. Abigail died in 1915. Her correspondence and other papers are housed in Coll 232B. Benjamin Charles Duniway was born in Illinois in 1830. He and Abigail were married August 2, 1853. He died in 1896. The Duniways had six children: Clara, Willis, Hubert, Wilkie, Clyde, and Ralph. Clara Bell Duniway was born in 1854. She married Donald Stearns in 1876 and they had one son, Earl. Clara died of tuberculosis in 1886 in Portland, Oregon. Willis Duniway, born in Clackamas in 1856, became Secretary to Governor Lord in 1894, the same year he married Mary Alice MacCormac. He was elected Oregon State Printer in 1906. Willis died in Portland of heart failure in 1913. Hubert Duniway, born in Yamhill, became a lumber exporter. He was married to Ida Lesley in 1878, Cora Parsons in 1884, and Eleanora Allen in 1910. Hubert died in New York City in 1938. Wilkie Collins Duniway, born in 1861 in Yamhill, was a printer for various Portland papers, and was editor of the Weekly Oregon from 1894 to 1905. Wilkie died in Portland in 1927. Clyde Duniway, born in 1866 in Albany, became an academic. He was a history professor at Stanford University and president of various universities. He married Caroline Cushing in 1901. Their son David Duniway, a former State Archivist of Oregon, was responsible for preserving much of the family's history. Clyde died in 1944 in Stanford, California. Ralph Roelofson Duniway was born in 1869 in Albany. He married Kate Schermerhorn in 1894. He became a Portland City Attorney. Ralph died in Portland in 1920.
