Biographical History
Naval officer.
American naval officer.
Thomas Truxtun (1755-1822), American naval officer who distinguished himself during the Revolutionary War and the Quasi War with France. In 1795, he was involved in a failed shipping contract with the French envoy, which resulted in substantial losses to Truxton. After the U. S. government assumed responsibility for such losses (known as French Spoliation Claims) by a Congressional Act of 1885, Truxton's heirs revived the case through the U.S. Court of Claims.
Thomas Truxtun was a privateer during the American Revolution, a merchant ship commander, and United States naval officer.
