Dr. Stephen DeWitt Stephens (1894- ) of Maplewood, N.J., was a professor of English and Director of the Division of Humanities at Newark College of Arts and Sciences of Rutgers University, and author of The Mavericks: American Engravers. Peter Maverick (1780-1831), along with brothers Samuel (1789-1845) and Andrew (1782-1826), learned the trade under his father Peter Rushton Maverick (1755-1811), and soon became an eminent copper-plate printer, engraver, and lithographer in Newark, N.J. and New York City. Peter was also one of the founders of the National Academy of Design (1825) and helped introduce to America mechanical engraving and lithography.
