Biographical History

Clergyman and missionary among the Oneida Indians.

Born in Norwich, Connecticut and educated at the College of New Jersey, Kirkland was a student of Eleazar Wheelock. He traveled to New York where he became a missionary to the Six Nations and the Oneida peoples for more than 40 years. Kirkland is credited with preventing several conflicts between native peoples and colonists. He founded Hamilton Oneida Academy, later Hamilton College.
