Biographical History
The Central of Georgia Railway, formed from its predecessor, The Central Railroad and Banking Company of Georgia in 1895 was a dominant force in the economic life of Georgia and parts of Alabama through the mid-twentieth century. Through its many branch and subsidiary lines, land holding companies, and agricultural experimentation, it controlled much of the region's transportation and was a strong influence in the rural development of the area.
(Cont.) The Augusta Union Station Company was chartered in 1901 for 101 years by the State of Georgia. According to its charter, the company was founded to operate a railroad within the city of Augusta, "whose general direction will be on such line as may be necessary to connect several of the railroads centering in the said City of Augusta." By 1904, several railroads, including the Central of Georgia Railway Company had agreed to lease the one-half mile of track and terminal facilities operated by the company.
