Biographical History

Haller Nutt (1816-1864) inherited and purchased several plantations including Araby, Evergreen, and Winter Quarters in Louisiana and Cloverdale and Laurel Hill in Mississippi.

Planter, of Natchez, Miss. Plantation journal and other papers (chiefly 1853-1860), mostly relating to the management of Nutt's land and slave holdings in Mississippi and Louisiana. Includes papers concerning the construction and furnishing of Longwood, Nutt's house at Natchez, which was designed by Samuel Sloan of Philadelphia.

Haller Nutt (1816-1864) was born to Dr. Rush Nutt and Eliza Ker Nutt at Laurel Hill Plantation in Jefferson County, Mississippi. After attending the University of Virginia between 1832 and 1835, he returned to Mississippi to assist his father in plantation management. Haller Nutt inherited and purchased several plantations including Araby, Evergreen, and Winter Quarters in Louisiana and Cloverdale and Laurel Hill in Mississippi. Nutt owned approximately 43,000 acres of land and 800 slaves.
