Biographical History

W. Stephen Allen, Jr. was born in Neptune Township, NJ, the son of Margaret Pope and William Stephen Allen. Allen received his secondary education in Philadelphia, attending Roosevelt Jr. High School and the Carson Long Institute before graduating from Germantown Academy. Allen received his architectural training at the University of Pennsylvania, completing a B. Arch. with honors in 1935 and an M. Arch. the following year. He distinguished himself as a student, winning a medal in graphics in 1931, second prize in the Samuel Huckel Jr. Architectural Prize in 1934, the Faculty Medal, Paul Cret Prize, and the T-Square Prize, all in 1935, as well as the Theophilus Parsons Chandler Fellowship and the Henry Gillette Woodman Scholarship in 1935 and 1936, respectively. After leaving Penn, Allen moved to San Francisco, where in 1940 he established a partnership with S. Robert Anshen. Anshen & Allen was a leading California firm in the 1960s.
