Biographical History

Sherman Minton was born in Georgetown, Indiana. He was a World War I veteran and graduated from Indiana University law department in 1915. He received a degree from Yale in 1916. He served as a U.S. senator from 1935-1941. From 1941-1949, he was on the circuit court of appeals for the seventh circuit. From 1949 to 1956 he served on the Supreme Court. Howard J. Bourne was a Quaker who lived in Portland, Indiana. Minton and Bourne were longtime acquaintances.

U.S. Supreme Court Justice

Minton was born in Georgetown, Indiana; studied law at Indiana and Yale universities, and practiced law in Florida and Indiana. He was elected U.S. Senator from Indiana in 1934, was Democratic Whip from 1940 to 1941, and chaired the Committee on Pensions in the 76th Congress. After losing his Senate seat, Minton was named to the U.S. Court of Appeals, Seventh Circuit, where he served from 1941 until 1949. Following the death of Justice Walter Treanor, Minton was appoited to the U.S. Supreme Court by President Truman. He served as an associate justice until 1956, when he resigned because of ill health and returned to New Albany, Indiana.
