Biographical History

Nelson Elliot Wallace was born on 10 September 1910 in New Cumnock, Ayrshire, Scotland. His father was a teacher. He was a student at the University of Glasgow , Scotland, from 1928-1932 . He obtained first class certificates in Ordinary Mathematics and Ordinary Natural Philosophy in 1928-1929; in Senior Organic Chemistry in 1929-1930; and in Advanced Inorganic Chemistry and Physical Chemistry in 1930-1931. He also won the Joseph Black Medal in Chemistry in 1928-1929 . He graduated BSc with first class honours in 1932 . He was involved in the Glasgow University Company of Honourable Alchemists as a committee member 1929-1931 , as the Editor of The Alchemist newsletter 1931-1932, as vice-president 1932-1933 and as president 1933-1934 .

On completion of his studies Nelson Wallace went to work for ICI. He retired in 1974 . He began organising reunions of the chemistry class of 1932 in 1951. The 50th anniversary reunion in 1982 was featured in an article in the Glasgow Herald dated 12 July 1982. e died on the 17th October 2009 in Yarm in North East England.
