Biographical History
Leonard Peter Schultz (1901-1986) was born in Michigan and educated at Albion College, the University of Michigan, and the University of Washington. He taught at Michigan, 1925-1927, and Washington, 1928-1936, before coming to the United States National Museum as Assistant Curator of the Division of Fishes in 1936. Schultz was made Curator in 1938 and retained that position until his retirement from administrative duties in 1965. He was Senior Zoologist from 1965 to 1968 and Zoologist Emeritus from 1968 until his death. Schultz's research interests included the classification and taxonomy of fishes, sharks and shark attacks, and the life history of fishes. He participated in a number of expeditions, most notably the Navy Surveying Expedition to the Phoenix and Samoan Islands, 1939, and the zoological surveys prior to and following the Bikini Atoll atomic bomb tests.
