Biographical History
Sir Hector C Cameron (1843-1928), surgeon. Born in 1843, son of Donald Cameron, sugar planter in Demerara, Cameron went to school at Madras College, St Andrews and then studied at the United College of St Andrews University, graduating in 1862. He went on to study medicine at Glasgow University and then worked as a surgeon at Glasgow Royal Infirmary from 1868 until 1881 and then at the Western Infirmary. In 1900, he became professor of clinical surgery at the University of Glasgow, retiring in 1910.
Hector Clare Cameron was born in Demerara (in Guyana), on 30 September 1843. He was the son of Donald Cameron a sugar-planter at Plantation Zeelugt, Demerara (Dutch Guiana, now Guyana). He studied at St. Andrews, Edinburgh and Glasgow Universities. Cameron was President of the faculty of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. Latterly he was Emeritus Professor of Clinical Surgery, University of Glasgow, and Dean of Faculties at the University of Glasgow. He was knighted in 1900 and received the CBE in 1918. Sir Hector Clare Cameron died on 22 November 1928.
