Biographical History

John DeCamp was Director of Publicity and Public Relations at the University of Cincinnati from 1925-1967, and was widely known as a pioneer in the educational public relations field. . He was born in Cincinnati on August 31, 1902 and attended Hughes High School and the University of Cincinnati. He graduated from UC with a Bachelor of Arts in 1924, and was a reporter for the Cincinnati Enquirer for one year. He then returned to UC in 1925 to serve as Director of Publicity, where early in his career, he also served as the alumni secretary and editor of the Cincinnati Alumnus magazine. In 1945, he was promoted to Director of Public Relations. He retired in 1967. DeCamp witnessed the growth of the university from an enrollment of 6400 to that of 25,577 when he retired.

He was active in the American College Public Relations Association of which he was president from 1937-1938. He was also a member of the Public Relations Society of America and was awarded with a medal of merit from Pi Delta Epsilon, the national honorary society for journalism. In 1987, Decamp received UC's Award for Excellence. He co-authored the College Publicity Manual .
