Biographical History

Robert Blair Campbell (?-1862) was a South Carolina and Alabama state representative, diplomat, soldier, and commissioner, born in South Carolina. Campbell was engaged in agricultural pursuits and was commissioned captain in the South Carolina Militia in 1814. He served in the South Carolina state senate, 1821-1823, as a Jackson Republican in the 18th U.S. Congress (1823–1825), and again in the South Carolina state senate, 1830-1834. Campbell served as Nullifier to the 23rd U.S. Congress, filling the vacancy caused by the death of Representative Thomas B. Singleton, and was re-elected to the same position in the 24th U.S. Congress, 1834-1837. In 1837, his brother and fellow Congressman John Campbell succeeded him as Nullifier. During the nullification movement, he was commissioned general of South Carolina troops in 1833.

Around 1840, Campbell moved to Lowndes County, Alabama, to serve as a member of the Alabama state house of representatives. He was U.S. consul at Havana, Cuba, 1842-1850. He next moved to San Antonio, Texas, where he served as a U.S. commissioner to aid in settlement of the disputed Texas-Mexico boundary line. Campbell then served as U.S. consul at London, England, 1854- 1861. He moved to Ealing, London, England, where he died July 12, 1862.
