Biographical History
British author.
Epithet: novelist, sister of Sir R K Porter
Anna Maria Porter, like her sister Jane, was a popular English novelist and poet. Precocious and nurtured in her early years, Anna Maria published a collection of short stories at the age of sixteen, and went on to write a number of romantic novels. Her novels were popular in her day, but critics generally dismissed their contrived, illogical plots. Although her works have not aged well, they were influential in their portrayal of good characters in a corrupting world.
Anna Maria Porter (1780-1832) was a novelist whose works included The Hungarian brothers (1807), Don Sebastian, or, The House of Braganza (1809), Ballad romances and other poems (1811), The recluse of Norway (1814), Tales of pity on fishing, shooting and hunting (1814), The knight of St John (1817), and Roche Blanche, or, The hunters of the Pyrenees. In addition she co-authored at least two novels with her sister, Jane Porter.
