Biographical History
Norma Condee is active in numerous Central Pennsylvania musical organizations, including translating choral works from German into English for performance. Her husband, Ralph, was a long-time professor of English literature and humanities at the Pennsylvania State University.
Ralph Condee and Norma "Bym" Condee (née Faricy) were cryptanalysts (code-breakers) prior to meeting and during World War II. Both were recruited separately following college graduation in 1941. Ralph had a degree in classics and English from the University of Chicago and spoke several languages; Norma, a graduate of Vassar College, "spoke the languages of math and music." The Condees married on October 10, 1942, prior to Ralph's deployment the following year, upon which Norma was required to resign her code-breaking position for security reasons. Ralph Condee later became professor of English literature at Penn State. Code breakers were released from their code of silence about their work in 1980.
