Biographical History
The Eaton Reindeer Station, located in Northwestern Alaska, about 10 miles above the mouth of the Unalaklik River, was named for General John Eaton, U.S. Commissioner of Education. This Station, established as part of a plan to create year-round employment for Alaska Natives, was one of the earliest reindeer stations in Alaska. Between 1891 and 1902, 1280 reindeer were brought into the territory from Siberia for domestication, a program made possible by the ability of the reindeer to survive the year-round on the arctic tundra.
