Biographical History
Missionary to Chinese under American Baptist Board of Foreign Missions, sailed from Boston, 1835; lived in Singapore and Macao, 1836-42; became first Baptist missionary to live in China; organized first Baptist Church in Hong Kong, 1842; Chinese church in Sacramento, Calif. after 1852; pastor in S.C. 1861-1863.
J.L. Shuck was the first Baptist missionary to China appointed by the Triennial Convention, 1835; in 1846 the Southern Baptist Convention Foreign Mission Board appointed him to Canton, China. He was later transferred to Shanghai.
